General Funding

Applications for research grants are invited from research staff at universities and research institutions worldwide. AICR is keen to support scientists establishing their first research group, and encourages applications from this quarter.  Grants, and grant applications are administered by the small permanent staff at the AICR office in St Andrews on an extremely cost effective basis.

Overview

AICR's aim is to support fundamental research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The emphasis is on basic, as opposed to clinical research.  We will consider proposals in which a mixture of basic and clinical research is proposed.  However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research and many substantially clinical applications are beyond the remit of AICR.  Before submitting applications of a clinical or semi-clinical nature, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact AICR for advice.

The Association is keen to support scientists establishing their first research group, work in areas that are relatively under-funded or unexplored, and pump-priming or preliminary research projects and projects involving international collaboration. The award of grants is determined by a Scientific Committee, comprised of eminent cancer researchers, who advise the Board on the most appropriate areas for support.

AICR emphasises the need for a flexible approach to funding, and is always examining new approaches to solving problems in cancer research. Projects are for a maximum of three years and can include funding for research staff (post doctoral and/or PhD students), consumables, essential items of equipment and travel to conferences.

We are funding projects in many different countries, and encourage collaboration between individual recipients of grants where possible.

By funding only the best science, we ensure that we have the highest chance of making significant progress.  Each submission is peer reviewed by 2 leading experts before being put before our Scientific Advisory Committee for detailed discussion.
