NEW - International Cancer Research Fellowships
Deadline for applications 30th June 2008
AICR’s International Cancer Research Fellowship provides support for outstanding young investigators who want to establish an independent research group. The International Fellowships are open to applicants from any country and are tenable in any country.
Type of Research Supported
Fellowships are designed to support fundamental or translational cancer research. The research projects may include some clinical studies, but these should be a relevant aspect of the research proposed. Research projects that are mostly clinical will not be accepted.
Research Support for Fellowship Programme
The AICR International Cancer Fellowships are tenable for 6 years and provides significant research support, including:
- Salaries for the applicant plus 2 research staff at appropriate levels.
- Consumable costs of £15,000 per year for the applicant and for each of the employed research staff.
- Where required, and when adequate justification is given, additional running costs for specific items such as animal costs, special reagents, etc, can be awarded.
- Equipment up to £50,000, where not available at the host institution.
- Travel costs of £500 per researcher per year.
Applicants
Applicants will be expected to be well qualified for a career in research, and demonstrate the promise of becoming future research leaders.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) and have between three and eight years' postdoctoral experience at the time they would take up the Fellowship. Consideration will be given to those where their career has been affected either by a late start, or by interruption for personal or family reasons.
The Fellowships are not available for anyone appointed to a tenured or tenure-track research position.
Host Institution
Applicants are encouraged to take up the Fellowship at a new institution, chosen because it will provide a good environment for their research.
The institution will be expected to give them the status of junior group leader or equivalent and, subject to satisfactory performance, offer the Fellow a long-term position at the end of the Fellowship.
Candidates should discuss this issue with their proposed host institution before the application is made as AICR will require confirmation of the agreed commitment.
Number of Awards
One Fellowship will be awarded annually. The AICR Fellow will be subject to annual review, with continuation dependent upon satisfactory progress.
Applications
The application form and further information is available below.
Applications are invited for submission from 1st May 2008 with the deadline for receipt of applications being 5pm (GMT) on 30th June 2008.
Short-listed candidates will be notified in October 2008 and interviewed on 12th November 2008, in Edinburgh.
Funding for the successful applicant will commence on or after 1st January 2009.
All applications for Fellowships must include:
- a letter of support from their group leader, or equivalent, at their current institution
- a letter from the Head of Department at the institution where the research will be carried out, agreeing to provide the Fellow with laboratory space, infrastructure support and accepting the career provisions described above
- a letter from one personal referee selected by the applicant.
Applications will be assessed, by the AICR Fellowship Panel and external scientific referees, on the following:
- scientific merit: e.g. whether they are original or novel, feasible, address important questions of relevance to cancer, and propose appropriate methodology and experimental design.
- the quality and potential of the applicant as a cancer research scientist.
Successful Applicant
Once appointed the AICR Fellow will be required to sign our Contract of Agreement, along with representatives of the host institution. The Fellow is required to set up their research laboratory and recruit suitable staff.
A mentor will be appointed for each Fellow, to provide scientific advice and guidance.
All Fellows will be expected to submit annual progress reports to AICR, and also attend an annual seminar.
AICR expects the Fellow to work with them to promote AICR and introduce other scientists to its work.
