Time slips by!

Friday, 29 February 2008 13:28 by douglas

Only 6 weeks to go until the big day!

Frightening!

I'm glad some of you have responded to my comments I placed last week, they make interesting reading. Like some of you I plan a 1/2 marathon before the full race. My intention being to run one near Glasgow on March 9th. The plan is to run in a way that I feel in control in an attempt to build up my confidence about running the full distance. I hope the wheels dont come off as it doesn't leave long to rebuild that confidence level.

It's interesting to read the comments on your training. I certainly wouldn't want to disagree with Hayley Yelling's advice and indeed it seems to make good sense. Training shouldn't leave you too tired and believe me you will feel tired for a few days after the marathon, so running no further than 75% of the marathon distance in any one run seems a good idea. I certainly wont be! I also believe in enjoying your rest days as long as you dont have too many! The best athletes say they are the most important days in their schedules.

Well tomorrow is the start of March. Only one more month of hard training to go! When April comes we should be starting to ease down.In the meantime I hope you training goes well and please continue to leave comments on here.

Douglas (What a Guy) Gunstone!!

I have just been speaking to Douglas and he tells me that despite this awful weather (lashing rain and 70mph wind) he will still be going running tonight as he's already had his day off this week!

I respect Douglas and all our runners - I think what you are doing is amazing. I would love to know where you get your 'willpower' and 'get up and go' - especially on a day like this!

I really can't wait to meet you all on marathon day (you'll hear me cheering you on) and I'll see you at the finish line!!

Well done douglas. I sat in my front room tonight [rest night] thinking thank goodness I'm not running in that ! I have a 14 mile target for tomorrow, have the "benefit" of living near the official start so its greenwich park to deptford and back if my stamina holds out that far as Jit [fellow runner for AICR) did 12 1/2 mile last week so its another step up. I also hit another target this week which was the get under the 15 1/2 stone mark - yes I'm not the lightest runner in the world but certainly hope to continue getting a wee bit thinner to look my best at the post race reception.

Hi all

Thought I would add a few titbits to the blog and hope that some of you find the following useful. I've run 4 marathons before (NY 2000, 2002, 2004 and Chicago 2005) so many learnings and things I wish people had told me before!

Training - one of the toughest things about the day is the time you will be on your feet so in my opinion, you should aim at having done one run of over 3 hours. I aim to do at least 2 with the Finchley 20 this Sunday being my first after the Berkhamsted Half last Sunday. It's not about the times, all about being ready for 13 April. I normally carry 5 £1 coins blu-tacked together so Lucozade/Jellybaby stops are easy. I normally take a 30-45 sec walk when taking my drink so I get some rest as well as keeping my front dry!

Fuelling before any run over an hour is key so think about your race-day breakfast now. And try and get a really proper night's sleep on the Friday night. Saturday night is important, Friday more so.

I am running in memory of a cousin who passed on unexpectedly in Nov 2006 through pancreatic cancer. Her memory and spirit will wing me all the way to Birdcage Walk on the 13th. Know your reason "why"....

What I found really helped in 2004 and 2005 was my "26 list". Stapled to my shorts was a thin strip of paper with the names of 26 people or groups of people that I would focus on for each mile. People who mattter in my life. people I love and cherish. Each gets 9 mins! I save the last 365 yards for ME!

Last but not least, it's not too early to book your Monday deep-tissue massage now Smile

Hope some of this has been useful. For those of you about to embark on your first, enjoy every minute coz it goes far TOO quickly. Remember you can focus on Pain or Pleasure, not both. Choose yours wisely!

Great post Mehul!

I watched a programme last week about the "Strathpuffer 24"

strathpuffer.co.uk/.../event_strathpuffer.htm

It centred around one of the BBC presenters who was taking part in this 24 hour mountain bike race in the depths of a dark Scottish winter. He did exactly what you suggest and had a particular thought in his mind for each of the gruelling laps.

It seems to do the trick.

All the best to everyone,

Jack

Thanks for posting this article. I'm unquestionably frustrated with struggling to search out germane and intelligent commentary on this matter. Everybody now goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your concise, pertinent insight.
