A Proper Introduction

The first entry on this blog was placed by Jack our IT guy so I want to add something myself. For my sins I am the accountant at AICR and have been here for over three yeasrs. Ever since I started here and my colleagues learnt I did 'some running' they have been asking me to run the London Marathon for AICR. My response has always been 'one year' until this year when for some daft reason I said OK. I now wonder why i said 'yes', there is a huge difference between 'some running' and running a marathon.

I have run marathons before but in my younger days. It is almost twenty years since I last did one and indeed ran the first two london marathons when numbers taking part were far smaller. However that was a long time ago and I am far slower now and tell myself that the discomfort I seem to remember in the last hour of a marathon ( I'm trying not to think of it as pain) will be worth it if AICR benefits. My training is going reasonably well, managing to run six times some weeks but should probably be running a bit further each time.

AICR have been fortunate to have people raising funds for us in The London Marathon for many years now. However it seems to us a pity that most of them don't meet each other or weven know each other. i hope this blog will help to change this. Please use it to tell us about yourselves, why you are running and your hopes for the day. Also please let us know how the training is going and how you manage to motivate yourself to get out and cover the miles.

Please remeber too that Jane, our marathon coordinator, has arranged a venue for us all to meet after the event. We would love to meet you all and your friends and family who might be with you on the day. You will receive our thanks and congratulations and be able to start that all important 'fluid replacement.'

i look forward to meeting you then and in the meantime hope there is chat and verbal banter on here!

Hi Douglas,

I'm glad you are staking a claim for the males in the office. It's about time we got the women running as well ;)

<ducking and running>

All the best,

Jack

Hi Douglas
I'm interested that you said this is your first marathon in twenty years. I do n't believe age is a problem I was 53 when I ran my first London Marathon. Previous to that I just ran to keep fit. Since then I did the Edinburgh Marathon in 2006 and London last year and again this year. I got a few aches and pains in my right knee but hopefully nothing that a support tube and stretching exercises can n't cure. Training is going well managing to keep up with the Perfect World program in the LM magazine. This week I am backing off a little as I am running in the Liverpool 1/2 marathon on Sunday.
One thing you may be able to help me with, last year apart from the heat I was pretty well knackered after four hours and I had another 50 mins to run / walk. I don't think the long training runs are long enough timewise if you know you are going to do only 10 min. miles. Running for 180 to 190 mins won't give you the experience of doing 20 miles for four hours pre the marathon I'm thinking of extending some of the long runs up to 240 mins so I know I have done 20 miles. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi to all the people running for AICR

Im a Marathon first timer and as I only started running last September my goal is to finish the course running---- no set times!!

Unfortunatly I have been injured for two weeks which has set me back, but back to training...god its hard! Hope to run the Silverstone half on the 8th March.
Im in Dubai at the moment which is not ideal running territory but the treadmill has been good.

All the best to all in the run up.

Hi all,

As a first timer too, it's really difficult to decide how far and long you should run prior to the race. At the London Marathon gold bond seminar (which was really good) the athlete Hayley Yelling advised 3 hours max or 18 mile max, and be careful going over this as the body takes a while to recover. I'm on 10 minute mile pace at the mo, just extending beyond 12 miles so 3 hours/18 miles is my aim at the 3 weeks to go mark - if I feel strong enough to do more than that I may have a go but I doubt it.

As for injuries Ian, they are a nightmare - I got crocked after 4 weeks and its mind over matter - you really want to go out and train but you know you have to rest. So good luck on the recovery.

I tried my AICR vest last weekend on a training run and I'm sure it made me run a bit faster. I'll be wearing it again at the Brentwood 1/2 marathon on 9th March - so if any more of you are doing that run too, look out for me....but I suspect you may be in front of me !!

I wish I'd had the advice given above when I ran my one and only marathon in 1983. I had no set plan and just did lots of running prior to the event. The mistake I seem to have made was that 7 days before the event I ran 22 miles figuring it would stand me in good stead for the big day. Unfortunately, a week later I fell to bits at 23 miles - if only the web had been around then.

Good luck to everyone,

Jack

Best of luck to all of you planning a 1/2 marathon run over the next week or two. A word of warning however, make sure you have a full tank of fuel! Last Sunday, 2nd I ran the Liverpool 1/2 marathon with my son Andrew. The race starts at Sefton Park and you have to park up in Liverpool and be bussed up to the start. This means a early start to get there and breakfast at 0630 in the morning. Nearly 3 1/2 hours before the start of the run. Last year I got a PB at 1hr 55mins, this year after 10 miles I just about crawled aroung and came in at a tortoise like 2hrs 8 mins. I 've done this run many times before but allways took some food to eat prior to the race things like energy bars and bannanas and of course the obligatory Lucozade drinks. This year apart from a bowl of porridge and a bannana at 0630 I ate and drank nothing proir to the run. A bitter lesson to learn please don t make the same mistake as me. Best of luck

Accountant and running marathon. Awesome. It's hard to stay fit for it. I used to run a lot before but now I've lost the required fitness. Keep working hard.
