London Marathon Class of 2010

AICR is proud to introduce you to our London Marathon Class of 2010.

This year we had a whole wealth of runners running the marathon on our behalf; men, women, doctors, dentists, Spaniards, Kiwis, students, lecturers, cancer survivors, soldiers, a superhero, a German football fanatic.. and let’s not forget our pizza-loving Welsh belle.

We were proud to have a truly diverse and international team and AICR believes that this was our most passionate and dedicated team to date!

Each member of our London Marathon team had an immense challenge on their hands - both mentally and physically.

This year we set our London Marathon team a target of

£55,000.

Cancer is a worldwide problem that needs a worldwide solution. But the success of our cancer research doesn’t start in the lab, it starts with people like you.

Mary Allen, 41, Exeter

I am raising money for AICR (Association for International Cancer Research) because it's logo "Cancer knows no Boundaries. Fortunately, neither do we" really touched me as I have several close friends who are living daily with cancer, but who are still so strong.

I've been fortunate enough to have been allocated a place in this year’s London Marathon. I'm going to run 26 miles and I want to do this for my friends and also to raise as much money as possible, so we can try to understand cancer more, and so it can be treated more effectively.

David Bright (aka Mighty Brighty), 28, Essex

"I am Mighty Brighty A.K.A Mr David Bright. I’m a twenty-something year old lad originally from Clacton-on-sea but I now reside in Colchester. Back in October I ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon on behalf of a male cancer charity; after personally being affected by it myself. Now I’m back and I’ve manned up. Now it’s time for a FULL marathon. The London Marathon!

I’m running for a cancer charity, namely the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR), which funds cutting edge research into the causes of cancer and the prevention of cancer. Throughout your lifetime, it is likely that you will be touched by cancer in some way. It’s certainly been this way for me. Along with myself, both my parents have been unfortunate enough to be touched by cancer and in January 2007 my Uncle Kevin lost his fight with it. So for me to run for a general cancer research charity, rather than a male cancer charity was the next logical step. I have a mountain to climb training wise. But the training I can handle myself. The other hurdle I have to overcome is raising money for this cause. For this, I need your help! PLEASE dig deep for whatever you can. I assure you, that after the London Marathon, I’ll hang up my money raising hat…. Thank you and God bless"

Oliver Gauci, 21, Middlesex

"In a moment of testosterone filled, sheer madness I've decided to make a very late decision to do the London Marathon (26.2 miles) on April 25th. It usually takes on average 7 months to train for such an event; howver The Gauch being The Gauch, relishing a challenge, I have given myself just over 3 months to train!! It is rare to know somoene who has not been affected by cancer, whether it is a family member, friend or a friend's friend. I, having lost a family member from cancer want to help recent others from such losses. I am aiming to raise £1,800 for AICR. I would really appreciate any money that you can send in my direction, no matter how small or large! I think it'd be great to go way beyond the £1800 mark and I can't see any reason as to why we can't do that."

Paul Grady, 40, Surrey

"I have seen the devastation cancer causes to the sufferers and their families. It takes no prisoners whether young or old. Hopefully the monies raised will assist in finding new cures for this terrible disease."

"I like supporting AICR because there is a real connection with where the money is spent. The newsletter is always very informative and interesting. Research sponsored by AICR is for the world to see."

Thomas Guhlke, 25, Gauting - Germany

"In my job I am responsible for flights with blood stem cells and bone marrow. I’m running for AICR because of the links the charity has with my job but also because I had so much fun last year helping AICR out beside the track. In my spare time I play lots of football and I am a goalkeeper, which doesn’t require me to do much running! I soon got bored of standing around and started to go running, at first really slowly, but then I got better and better. Now, I’ve completed 6 marathons and I can’t wait to run in the London Marathon this year!"

 Alex Hall, 24, Sussex

Paul Harford, 41, New Zealand (originally from Dublin)

"I admire the AICR approach which is not bound by geographical boundaries but rather supports innovative research wherever it takes place."

Paul’s challenge is also international in nature. He is planning to run the Boston Marathon on 19 April, the London Marathon on 25 April and the Rotorua (New Zealand) Marathon on 1 May 2010.

"I hope the challenge of running three marathons in three weeks on three continents will attract attention and encourage people to give generously to the AICR. As my father died of cancer at the age of 52, I would be privileged to run in his memory and for AICR in the London Marathon."

Paul is married to Phillippa and they have two children, Katie aged 9 and Matthew aged 8.

Will Horby, 40, London

"Since leaving Hong Kong over 2 years ago my fitness regime of pints, pies, wine and sofas has not worked out as well as expected so a change is needed. Quite why that needs to be the London Marathon I still don't know but I'd love you to support me and the good people at the AICR as it will also help to drag me around the course and I might actually finish."

Lucy Hughes, 35, Kent

"It has been an ambition of mine to run the London Marathon for a very long time, and this is the year my dream will come true! I have decided to run for AICR as this is a charity that has meaning for me and for many of my friends and family. Last year I lost my father in law, Roy, to cancer. He was an incredible man, father and husband. I am also running for my friend Alessandra who at the moment is battling against cancer of the liver and bone marrow.

For those of you who know me well, you'll know that if I manage to run this without breaking any limbs I'll be doing well! But my sufferance on that day will be nothing compared to the physical and emotional pain millions of people go through when affected by cancer, and that thought alone WILL keep me going!

Remember: "Once you choose hope, anything is possible." ~ Christopher Reeve."

Ben Jones, 30, London

"Hello everyone. My name is Ben, aged 30, originally from Birmingham but now living (and clocking up all those training miles!) in the big smoke that is London.

In terms of a bit more about me by way of background; I run because I enjoy it - both the run itself and that post-run feeling.  In particular I love running to explore my local area, or indeed any areas that I happen to be visiting! Apart from running my interests include outdoor sports, travel and photography.I have never run a marathon before but after a couple of successful half-marathons felt I was ready for the challenge and I am really looking forward to running the London Marathon for such a fantastic organisation as AICR. It is going to be hugely motivating, especially from mile 20 onwards, to know that I am running to help raise valuable funds for such a good cause. Please feel free to go to my sponsorship page if you would like to sponsor me in this worthy cause!"

Mike Kelly, 39, Budakezi - Hungary

"I'm running for AICR because I believe in the work they do and know that one day I and millions of others will be spared the terrible heartache of loss. In spite of everything, I really believe that cancer will one day be beaten and the further suffering and loss of those we love will be prevented. I am so sincerely grateful for any amount that you can contribute as it will all help me to reach my target. As ever I've been putting my heart and soul into the training and hope I can get round in a half decent time, but more on that nearer the race!"

Sarah Ladd, 41, Cardiff

"I have been running for a few years now with some 10k and half marathons to my name and thought that a full marathon would be the next challenge and I wasn't wrong! The atmosphere is always great at a race, and it's always such an emotional feeling on crossing the finishing line; the London Marathon must be so many times greater and I can't wait to feel that all the hard work has been worth that feeling. I'm running for AICR because I wanted to raise money for cancer research. Cancer touches everyone’s lives and without continuing research many more of the people we love would not be around.

I am so lucky that AICR decided to let me have one of their Golden Bond places. My favourite colour is green, I love to eat pizza and will be looking forward to ordering the biggest one on my return to Cardiff after the race."

Chris Maidment, 28, Caerphilly

"This year I am getting married and training for a marathon was as good an excuse as any to try to get my fitness back to somewhere that I would be happy with! I sat down with my fiance and we put together a list of close family and friends that we would like to spend the day with, but unfortunately a close family friend and a close family member were diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly after and will now not be able to share our special day with us. It was at this time that I decided that I wanted to run the London Marathon and I wanted to run and raise money for a cancer charity. I applied for a place with AICR and luckily I was successful. Since then many miles have passed under my feet and I am looking forward to pushing myself mentally and physically on April 25th".

Anjali Mukerji, 37, Birmingham

"Dad and I always watched the London Marathon on television and talked about how much we would love to participate ourselves. He passed away last July after battling with lung, bone and brain cancer. I am running for myself, my Dad and everyone who has ever been, and those that will be, affected by cancer."

Debbie Reid, 41, London (originally from New Zealand)

"This will be my 2nd marathon, having running the last ever Flora London Marathon and now the first ever Virgin London Marathon. I have been supporting AICR through monthly donations since 2002 and I’m proud to be running for them again this year. I came over to the UK to travel and like going to out of the way places - last year I visited Timbuktu and this September I'm going to do the "Gorilla's in the Mist" tour to Rwanda."

Nicola Rendall, 29, and Neil Sills, 33, London

"This year for the first time (and probably only time!!!) I will be running the London marathon on 25th April 2010. This is a goal I have wanted to achieve for as long as I can remember and I hope many of you will be able to come out and support me on the day!

I am also running for an extremely worthy cause that would greatly appreciate your help. I’m sure many of you know someone who is, or has been, affected by cancer. AICR provides important project funding for a variety of cancers including prostate, breast, bowel, colon, lung and brain cancer. Without such funding diagnosis and treatment would not be improved for a disease that touches many of our lives. A small donation will make a big difference. After all every penny really does count."

David Segura, 32, Cork (originally from Spain)

"I was looking for charities to run for for quite a long time and I am very proud that AICR picked me to run for them in this year’s London Marathon. AICR is a global research organisation that is performing a great job researching cancer."

"My story starts one year ago when three friends were talking about crazy things to do in London and one of them bet the others that he could run the London Marathon in 2010. So here I am, running most days to save my Spanish pride! And despite comments from friends like "running is just another form of insanity" or "why don’t you start your training by running to the bar for more pints" I am doing well. I gave up smoking and have reduced my bad habits to a minimum! Running and training for this Marathon has changed my life for good.

Paul Warren, 38, Hertford

"As some of you may know I am running in this year's Virgin London Marathon on the 25th April and once again I am trying to raise money for Association of International Cancer Research. They are a charity that I have been associated with for four years now and through fantastic family and friends like you we've helped raise lots of money for such a worthwhile cause. No matter how large or small, all support is gratefully received and makes my aching limbs and blisters (and that's just from the training) completely worthwhile.
