Customers and staff at convenience store chain David Sands – which has 28 stores across Fife and Perthshire – have now raised almost £25,000 for AICR.
David Sands, based in Kinross, has been supporting the charity for almost seven years, its most recent donation of £3,045 – raised through charging customers who choose to purchase a carrier bag in-store for just 3p – going directly towards funding the charity’s "Spotlight on prostate cancer" appeal.
AICR chief executive Norman Barrett spent a morning at the David Sands store in Lauder Road, Kirkcaldy where he got behind the counter to sell some bags and speak to customers about the work of AICR and where their donations go. He said: “AICR and David Sands have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sands family, their staff and customers for their invaluable support which I do hope will continue and which has been greatly appreciated by the management and staff of both organisations.
“Cancer is a global disease which, as we all know, affects all of our communities. When customers pay a few pence to buy a carrier bag to take their shopping home, it might not seem like a lot of money but as we have seen from the impressive total raised by David Sands shops for AICR, all those small donations add up to a something much bigger and can make a real difference in helping fund research into cancer, wherever in the world that research is taking place.”
Store manager Dave McEwan said: “Our customers and staff always get 100% behind all local fundraising efforts and are amazing when it comes to supporting good causes. There are few of us whose lives are untouched by cancer so we are delighted to support this Fife-based charity in its global research.”
