Before completing and submitting a grant application to AICR you should consider the following points:
- We will consider proposals in which a mixture of basic and clinical research is proposed. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research and many substantially clinical applications are beyond the remit of AICR. Before submitting applications of a clinical or semi-clinical nature, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact AICR for advice. We do not consider proposals for patient care, healthcare delivery or nursing research.
- The Main Applicant must be a suitably qualified researcher (minimum of PhD followed by three years research experience, or equivalent qualification or research experience). PhD students are only funded within a project grant.
- Check that your institution will accept our terms and conditions before submitting an application to AICR. These are not variable or negotiable.
- Follow the application process - read and follow the instructions however irritating you find them. There are reasons for all the rules.
- Only send the information we have requested.
- The research described in the application should be a discrete, hypothesis-driven project, achievable within the duration of the support requested. If you need collaborators say why, who and how.
- Cost the project properly with budgets that are reasonable for the proposed research. Costs such as photocopying charges, publication costs, reprints, secretarial or administrative assistance, telephone costs, advertising costs, journal subscriptions, maintenance of equipment, departmental/institutional overheads and government taxes are not funded by the Association.
- Bear in mind why we fund cancer research and make a case that fits our objectives - "AICR's aim is to support fundamental research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The emphasis is on basic, as opposed to clinical research".
- Do not make interpretations or assumptions based on what other charities or countries do or don't do! If in doubt check with AICR before submitting your application.
