AICR Staff Skydive

Many of our supporters have raised money over the years taking part in weird and wacky fundraising events. Suzanne and Claire, 2 new members of staff here at AICR were inspired by the success stories and decided that they wanted to organise a fundraising event for the charity too.  Not to be left out, 4 other members of staff have decided to join in and take part in a tandem freefall skydive to raise money for AICR.  The skydive was due to take place on Sunday 20th July 2008 at Skydive St Andrews. After a thorough briefing, those jumping and the rest of the staff who were there in support waited around for almost 10 hours while the wind blew outside. Eventually the jump was called off for the day due to high winds. Claire and Debbie tried to do their jumps on Saturday 26th July but yet again the weather was against them so unfortunately they were unable to jump. Claire, our summer student, will no longer be able to take part in the skydive as she has gone back to America so Helen, AICR's Fundraising Assistant is going to be Claire's replacement.

Three members of staff did their jump on Saturday 16th August 2008 and the remaining three will be doing their jump over the next few weeks. Unfortunately Karen broke her leg while landing so she is currently recovering from an operation in hospital. The fundraising is still continuing so please dig deep and support the very brave staff taking part in this fundraising event.

The 6 members of staff taking part in the skydive are:

Norman Barrett, Chief Executive

“I have taken part in abseiling, white water rafting, cycling, driving challenges, an escape pod challenge as well as marathon running, all for charity. This is a challenge that I want to do before I am too old and I also believe in not asking others to raise money for charity if I am not prepared to do it myself, so Geronimo……”

Geraldine Long, Donor Development Manager

"I was busy advising Suzanne and Claire to 'go for it' and 'take every opportunity' that came their way. So passionate was I about seizing every opportunity and living life to the full, that I decided to take my own advice and grasp this opportunity. Much to the disbelief of family and friends who have seen me have hysterics on a turbulent flight, I am going to throw myself out of a plane at 10,000 feet. However, they know how passionate I am about AICR and the work we do and fully understand my reasons for doing something completely out of character."

Debbie Wheelans, Grants Administrator

“It’s inspiring to hear of all the fundraising efforts being carried out by our supporters across the world, that I felt that it was time to do something for AICR myself, and what better way to do that than by jumping out of a plane!  I am very excited by the challenge, but think we (the AICR team) will need encouragement; please support us, and AICR.”

Karen Black, Financial Assistant

"I really do not know what has possessed me to agree to jumping out of a perfectly good plane at ten thousand feet!  When asked if I would take part I was 100% sure that I could never do it but when thinking about all the other things that people have done to fundraise for AICR in the last 8 years that I have worked here, I thought why not - if they can do it so can I!  I am absolutely terrified about the jump but it is for a great cause and as a team I know we can do it!"

Suzanne Shaw and Claire Mulry, Administrative Assistants

"Although we have just started working at AICR, we were immediately impressed by the level of commitment demonstrated by staff and supporters alike towards the fight against cancer. We were so impressed in fact that only two weeks later we are willing to jump out of a plane with Team AICR! Please help support a great group of people jumping for a very worth cause!"

The support generated for the AICR staff members has been outstanding. We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and generous donations.

Jordi Pitarch Marquino who took part in the Marathon des Sables 2008 for AICR sent this message of support.

Just a quick message to congratulate you and the rest at AICR for your impresive 10,000 feet sky dive. I hope it was as smooth as it could possibly be to do something like that - never mind desert marathons comparing to that!

We would like to thank Costa Coffee in St Andrews for letting the AICR staff members hold a fundraising event there on Friday 1st August. Thanks to everyone who came along and showed their support. The grand total of £219.87 was raised!
